A 28TH TO REMEMBER
Kevin is a very good friend of mine and we spent most time together.
Tho we were separated during school hours due to our separate departments, it still did not stop us from catching a vibe whenever we wanted to.
He was working while in school and had a large income so he did not fancy having a lodge.
He preferred to have an appropriate apartment in the city where he could be comfortable.
He had class, supreme class.
Unlike my roommate,
Mathais, a very lazy and sarcastic human with no direction in his life.
He was naturally endowed with knowledge and that was the only positive thing I ever saw in his life.
I, Mathias and Kevin always enjoyed hanging out after lectures or anytime we were free.
We walk together
Take pictures together
Read together
Pass and fail together, we had each other's back no matter the consequences.
We were one hell of a trio.
In our school calendar, examinations were coming quite close and we began preparations quite early so as to be on the safe side.
We have been receiving a lot of "F's" lately.
We did what had to be done and we sat for each of the examinations.
Within a short period of time, the examinations that begun had finished within the blink of an eye and the final semester was beginning to wrap up quickly.
It was a stressful semester so its conclusion was a call for celebration.
I was a type that fancied outing which has to be accompanied with lots of food.
So I began to make plans for a day out, for just three of us.
I did not want us to carry any female because their demands cannot be satisfied, even by GOD.
Mathais had a mindset of minimising any commodity that he ever possessed. He was addicted to the hard life.
He does not use public transport but would rather trek with earpieces in his ears all the way.
He does not buy new items until the old ones are rendered useless.
He is that way whether he has the money or he does not.
So I was thinking of not even inviting him for the outing.
He would want to move to a local joint where we would drink to stupor and then crawl home.
But Kevin would want us to go to a presidential sitout where the maidens would be dressed corporate with golden buttons on their sleeves.
Kevin was a rich young man and always wanted things expensive and with much class.
With their different mindsets, I had to make the planning myself.
The place I had to pick must be local but with class.
So I made the findings on my own and we would make the payments in group.
I told them about the plan and they agreed.
But I didn't pick any place yet.
We picked the 28th of the month for the outing and it was already 25th.
I made little findings and found one exorbitant place.
It was just the perfect spot. It was a bit little but well arranged and they had proper attendants.
I quickly told Kevin and Mathais about it and they agreed.
They knew I had a great sense of taste.
So the D-Day came and we balled in quite early.
We reached there about 1pm and we sat down in an open and comfortable spot.
Our dressing was mind blowing and had the whole street and customers looking at us.
We felt fly but we did not show it.
We gained a lot of attention and we planned to keep up the attitude.
Luckily we could get some ladies phone numbers and even get a date.
So we sat down and brought out our different types of phones to compliment our dressing.
We were ready to eat but we did not know it was going to be a meal to remember.
In this particular eatery, you would be issued a menu which consisted of the pictures of various meals and their prices.
You would take a glance and then make some indications on the menu and then return it to the waiter in which your meal would be prepared and served instantly.
The waiter was approaching us with order and we were getting set to eat.
We were discussing on how we would eat before Kevin's expression suddenly changed.
He saw something on his phone that left him disturbed and I wanted finding out.
So I asked him what was wrong and then he showed me a text message that he just read.
It was his mom, and she was involved in an accident so he had to take off.
I felt for him and I understood the situation so we had to let him go.
He got disorganized and left in a rush. Mathias did not even respond because his mind was focused on the meal that was coming our way.
He left in a dash and it was left with me and Mathais. I had some money on me so I believed that it would take us for the meal.
The hot waitress came towards us and dropped our meal in a glass stylish tray.
It was garri with soup filled with lots of meats and stockfish.
I was suprised on how such a place could have an awesome package.
Before the waitress could say, "Enjoy your meal and have a...."
Mathias had already dug deep into the meal and was eating like he was released from spiritual bondage.
The waitress left without uttering another word and went to attend to other people.
The meal was quite bigger than a usual affordable meal but I assumed it was a first timer treatment so I was not bothered.
I carefully washed my hands and began to swallow the balls of garri with style and speed.
Since Kevin left, we dropped our classy life for now and ate like real niggas.
We sucked and broke the stockfish to minute pieces and drilled the fish bones.
We ate every piece of meat and ensured the garri plate was empty.
While we were in action, a different waiter came and asked if we cared for refreshments and pointed at a flashy counter and told us to make our choice.
Our facial expression was totally priceless. Throughout our drinking expenditure, we have never come across such drinks.
Ranging from juices, to wines and the rest.
The waiter then said, "Who you love a sip?"
We assuming the sip was free, we nodded our heads like desperate lizards waiting for the sip.
He brought a large bottle of wine and poured lots of it into our glasses.
It was way more than a sip and we took gulps into our throats.
This was the best service we had received in a while.
We enjoyed our experience to the core but we had to leave before it got dark.
So we were still clearing our plates to ensure no food is wasted until Mathais spotted something.
The waitress that attended to us earlier was collecting payment from another customer that ate something similar to what we were served.
And he paid N10,000 for a plate, at that moment we lost appetite because we consumed three plates which amounted to N30,000 for just the meal.
That wasn't the only problem, the sip was actually N500 for each issue.
We looked at our table and we noticed that we had gone far and nothing was left behind.
I got tired of living when I realized the money I had with me.
It was just 7500 and that was final.
Mathais as usual had no money on him and we looked at each other, not knowing the way forward.
We had to be cool before the waiter could notice our plans.
I went outside to signal anyone for help but it was not possible.
All my friends I tried to connect with, did not have such amount.
And with what happened to Kevin, I couldn't ask him for money.
I thought whether to go back inside or run at the moment. I was hiding behind a car thinking till I felt a hand touching me.
My heart was quite heavy as I was scared of who it could be.
It was Mathais and he left the eatery since.
The waiter noticed that we were not there and they raised an alarm.
The gatemen were asked to seal the gates and our pictures from their security cameras were used to cross check.
We were stuck and had no other way out....
To at least have a little bit of reputation, we had to go in and explain ourselves.
Suddenly Kevin called me and I picked the call with instant speed.
He explained that his mother pranked him into rushing home because he forgot her birthday.
Finally, we explained to him and he sent the money instantly with some miscellaneous.
The Lord of Second Chance helped me and my joy knew no bounds.
We bounced in and faked that we went to discuss cofidental issues.
We even screamed at them for raising such alarm and we requested for their P.O.S so we could pay.
They rendered apologies and even told us to pay what we wished because of the semi embarrassment.
Mathais wanted paying for only the sip but I decided to pay for everything while we comfortably took our leave.
I promised myself to always make enquires before allowing my greediness to take control.
Mathias had no lesson to learn from.
He just saw it as an opportunity to enjoy the good life.
Then I realized I needed a source of income in order to be completely stable.
It was a 28th to remember.
